RICHIE ROBB CONGRESS – SECOND DISTRICT
Make no mistake about it. Shelley Moore Capito is a formidable politician. Anyone
challenging her cannot shy away from confrontation. Anne Barth, who enjoys the backing of the party establishment, has shown during this campaign she lacks the
substance to take on an entrenched incumbent like Capito.
Last week she dodged an interview with the Charleston Daily Mail, one of the largest
newspapers in the district and a strong supporter of Capito over the years. Rather than
subject herself to potentially hostile or challenging questions, Barth cited a scheduling
conflict. The Daily Mail had set up this interview a month in advance. I attended that
interview and took on the challenging questions.
Prior to this the largest television station in the district, WSAZ Channel 3, set up an interview with Barth. According to television station news director Scott Saxton’s blog when the interviewer tried to ask more piercing questions, Barth’s handlers
immediately spirited her away. I was interviewed by this same station and did not
avoid any of questions.
To take on a formidable opponent like Capito one cannot simply rely on superficial
platitudes, the endorsement of prominent figures or backing out of Washington, DC.
In fact that is the problem right now with Capito. She lacks the independence from
her party establishment in Washington, DC and the failed Bush administration. With
Ann Barth we would simply be exchanging one mouthpiece for another.
Democrats need someone who will carry the party banner into the campaign this Fall
against Shelley Moore Capito. This party simply cannot afford someone who avoids
confrontation, relies on bland superficiality and hangs on to the coattails of others.
I have a proven record of electability (8 ters and 32 years) at one of the district’s largest
cities, South Charleston. I also have a well earned reputation for standing up for what
I believe and not avoiding confrontation.
